Safety first: Stop using a glass cooktop that is cracked: spills can reach live parts underneath. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.

Common cooktop problems we fix

  1. 1. A gas burner won't ignite

    Usual causes
A burner cap that isn't seated flat, wet or blocked burner ports, a cracked igniter, a failed spark module, or no gas reaching that burner.
    What we check
Spark at each igniter, the burner head and ports, and gas flow to the burner.
  2. 2. The flame is weak, yellow or uneven

    Usual causes
Clogged ports or a misaligned cap are the usual causes; less often, the valve or the pressure regulator. A lazy yellow flame can mean poor combustion and should be checked.
    What we check
Burner ports, cap fit, flame shape, and the valve and regulator.
  3. 3. A radiant zone won't heat, or stays on high

    Usual causes
A failed element, a burned terminal, the switch that controls that zone, or a relay on the control board.
    What we check
The element, its terminals and the switch or board output.
  4. 4. An induction zone shows an error or won't detect the pan

    Usual causes
Induction only heats magnetic cookware, and very small pans may not register. If the pan is right, a blocked or failed cooling fan, a sensor or the power board.
    What we check
Pan detection, the cooling fan and airflow, sensors and the power board.
  5. 5. The touch controls won't respond

    Usual causes
The control lock is on, a spill is sitting on the touch panel, or the control board has failed.
    What we check
The touch panel and the control board.
  6. 6. The glass top is cracked

    Usual causes
Impact or a hot pan set on a cold, wet surface. The glass needs replacing before the cooktop is used again.
    What we check
Whether the glass panel is available for your model and the condition of the parts beneath it.

Safe things to check first

  • For induction, check your pan with a magnet. If the magnet doesn't stick firmly to the bottom, the zone won't heat it.
  • Wipe the touch panel dry and look for a lock or key symbol that's switched on.
  • On gas cooktops, lift each grate and check that the burner caps sit flat and centered.

If none of these fix it, call us before taking anything apart.

Types we work on

  • Gas cooktops and rangetops
  • Radiant (smooth glass) cooktops
  • Coil cooktops
  • Induction cooktops

What to have ready when you call

  • Brand and model number

Usually on the underside of the cooktop, visible from the cabinet below, or on a small plate near the controls. It can be hard to reach, so a photo of the label helps.

  • What it's doing, and since when

Noises, smells, leaks, or when in the cycle the problem starts.

  • Any error code

Write it down exactly as the display shows it.

Repair or replace?

Igniters, spark modules, switches, elements and fans are everyday repairs.

A new glass top can cost a large share of a new cooktop, so for an older unit it's worth comparing. On a high-end gas rangetop or induction cooktop that fits a custom cutout, repair is usually the better value.

Cooktop repair questions

Can I keep using a cracked glass cooktop?

No. Turn it off at the breaker if you can. A crack can let liquid reach the elements or wiring underneath.

Why does my induction cooktop beep but not heat?

Most often the pan isn't magnetic or is too small for the zone. Try a cast-iron pan; if that heats, the cooktop is fine.

Is a yellow gas flame normal?

A steady blue flame is normal. Occasional orange flecks can come from dust, but a lazy or mostly yellow flame should be checked.

Do you repair gas rangetops?

Yes, along with gas, radiant, coil and induction cooktops.
