Common oven & range problems we fix

  1. 1. The oven won't heat

    Usual causes
On gas ovens, the bake igniter can glow but still be too weak to open the gas valve. On electric ovens, a failed bake element, a relay on the control board, or a blown thermal fuse.
    What we check
Igniter current draw and the gas valve on gas models; the element, fuse and control outputs on electric models.
  2. 2. It runs hot or cold, or bakes unevenly

    Usual causes
A temperature sensor out of range, a broil element or convection fan that has stopped, or a door gasket that leaks heat.
    What we check
Sensor readings against an oven thermometer, each heating element, the convection fan and the door seal.
  3. 3. A gas burner clicks but won't light

    Usual causes
Moisture after a boil-over, a burner cap that isn't seated, clogged ports, a cracked igniter, or the spark module. Clicking that never stops is often a wet or failed burner switch.
    What we check
Spark at each igniter, the burner parts, and the switches and spark module.
  4. 4. An electric surface element won't heat

    Usual causes
The element itself, a burned terminal block, or the switch that controls that element.
    What we check
Each element and its switch and wiring.
  5. 5. The door stays locked after self-clean

    Usual causes
A failed lock motor or lock switch. Forcing the door can break the latch or the hinges.
    What we check
The lock motor, the switch and the control signals.
  6. 6. Error codes or a dead display

    Usual causes
A tripped breaker, a failed control board, or a worn keypad.
    What we check
Power to the unit and the control and keypad.

Safe things to check first

  • For an electric range or oven, check the breaker. They usually sit on a double breaker that can trip without a sign.
  • After cleaning the cooktop, let burner parts dry completely and set each cap flat before trying again.
  • After self-clean, let the oven cool fully. Some doors stay locked until the oven is cold.

If none of these fix it, call us before taking anything apart.

Types we work on

  • Gas, electric and dual-fuel ranges
  • Freestanding and slide-in ranges
  • Single and double wall ovens
  • Professional-style ranges

What to have ready when you call

  • Brand and model number

On the frame behind the oven door, on the frame of the storage or warming drawer, or along the side of the door opening. On wall ovens, look at the frame behind the door or on the side trim.

  • What it's doing, and since when

Noises, smells, leaks, or when in the cycle the problem starts.

  • Any error code

Write it down exactly as the display shows it.

Repair or replace?

Elements, igniters, sensors, switches and door locks are standard repairs on almost every range and oven.

Control boards cost more, so on an older, basic range it can make sense to compare with a new one. Wall ovens and professional-style ranges are usually worth repairing, because replacing them means matching the cutout or the gas connection.

Oven & range repair questions

Why does my gas oven take forever to heat up?

A weakening bake igniter is the most common cause. It still glows, but it takes longer and longer to draw enough current to open the gas valve, until one day it doesn't open at all.

A burner keeps clicking after I turn it off. Is that dangerous?

Turn the burner off and let the cooktop dry; clicking that won't stop is often moisture or a failed switch. If you ever smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility from outside.

Is self-clean hard on an oven?

It runs the oven far hotter than cooking does, and that heat is a common time for thermal fuses, sensors and door locks to fail, especially on older ovens.

Do you work on wall ovens and double ovens?

Yes, along with freestanding, slide-in and professional-style ranges.
